Discovering Home

In this episode of In Between Homes, I’m excited to introduce Alice, who shares her journey to finding a true sense of “home.” Alice currently lives in Australia, in the beautiful Byron Bay hinterland, but her story goes much deeper.

Though she was born in Australia, Alice’s heritage is a blend—her father is French, and her mother is Balinese. Growing up, she often felt like she didn’t fully belong to any one culture. People would ask where “home” was, assuming it was where she was born, but that didn’t resonate with her. Her identity felt split; in Bali, she was seen as “half French,” and in France, she was “not entirely French.”

The turning point came when she returned to Australia six years ago. At the airport, a security agent looked at her Australian passport and said, “Welcome home.” At that moment, she realized that home could be a choice, a place where she decided to belong. For Alice, home is now Australia, where she’s raising her children and building a life she loves.

Reflecting on the Past

Ten years ago, Alice's life looked very different.

Fresh out of her studies in hospitality management in France, she had just earned her master’s degree, envisioning a career in the hotel industry that would allow her to leverage her language skills and multicultural background. A friend of her father’s, who had known her since childhood, reached out on Facebook and suggested she come work in Australia. At 22 or 23, with an Australian passport but no family connections in the country—her family had left when she was 10—Alice decided to take the leap.

With nothing to lose, she moved to Australia and started working at a five-star hotel, where she quickly moved up to a manager-on-duty role. This experience in the corporate hospitality world marked the beginning of a new chapter in her journey.

Key Moments of Change

Looking at Alice’s life today, it’s clear she’s undergone a remarkable transformation.

Ten years ago, fresh out of her master’s in hospitality management, she was set on a hotel career, speaking multiple languages and leveraging her multicultural background. But after three years in Australia working at a five-star hotel, burnout hit. She needed a change, so she left her job, traveled, and followed a spontaneous invitation from a friend to Chile.

In Chile, Alice took on a job as a tour guide—a role completely outside her field, where she led clients on horseback rides, hikes, and mountain treks. Here, she found the deep connection with people she’d always craved. It was a pivotal moment of discovery and growth.

Her journey continued when she met her husband in Chile. Together, they returned to Australia in late 2018. She landed her first nine-to-five role at a real estate agency but soon felt an overwhelming sense of disconnection and lack of fulfillment. After about a year, she reached a breaking point. One morning, she physically couldn’t get out of bed, her body saying, “You’re not going to work today.” That moment was a turning point.

A week later, Alice quit her job and planned to visit her family in France. But the COVID lockdowns hit, leaving her jobless and grounded in Australia. While she had her husband’s support, he was starting his own entrepreneurial journey, and Alice found herself unsure of her next steps.

Yet, despite the uncertainty, she felt a sense of freedom—a belief that quitting was the right choice. Alice realized she needed to discover her purpose and embrace the potential within herself. That moment of paralysis, of truly listening to her body, marked the beginning of her journey toward a life aligned with her true passions and values.

Finding Your Purpose

So, how did Alice transition to her current purpose-driven work? She often shares with clients—many of whom struggle with questions around purpose—the very steps she took. Initially, Alice didn’t have a clear roadmap; it was an intuitive process. She began by writing lists: of her personal qualities, the life she wanted, and the characteristics of her ideal job. At this stage, she wasn’t even considering entrepreneurship. She simply wanted clarity on what a fulfilling role would look like for her.

She envisioned a job where she could use her multilingual skills, connecting with others through French, Spanish, Indonesian, and English. She also valued the freedom to travel, knowing her family was spread across continents. And, as someone who always wanted to be a mother, she knew she’d need work that allowed time for family. Putting these aspirations on paper clarified her goals and priorities.

During this period, she watched inspiring speakers like Tony Robbins on YouTube to keep her motivated. A friend also suggested she try the 21-Day Abundance Challenge by Deepak Chopra, which shifted her mindset from scarcity to abundance, essential while she was jobless and uncertain about her next steps.

Then, one day, she saw an ad for Marisa Peer’s Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) training. Having made her list, she immediately resonated with the idea of learning RTT, a form of hypnotherapy Marisa developed. Though she hadn’t previously experienced hypnotherapy or even considered therapy as a career, Alice felt an immediate calling. Without hesitation, she invested her savings and enrolled in the year-long course, training to become a certified hypnotherapist and Rapid Transformation Therapist. This leap of faith marked the beginning of her true purpose.

Today, four years into her practice, Alice finds deep meaning in helping others. She often references a quote from Marisa Peer: “When you do what you love, your life has meaning. When you share it with the world, your life has purpose.” This resonates deeply with her experience. For Alice, the connection, empathy, and guidance she provides have brought her to a place of fulfillment, and sharing this purpose has made her life feel truly purposeful.

Understanding Rapid Transformation Therapy

Alice explains a bit more about what Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) is, why clients seek her out, and how this work has fulfilled her goals in unexpected ways.

As an RTT therapist, Alice works with clients worldwide via Zoom, which means she can work from anywhere—whether she’s in Chile, Bali, or Australia. This flexibility has allowed her to check off each item on her career wish list, from traveling freely and working in multiple languages to setting a schedule that aligns with her life as a mother.

So, how does Rapid Transformational Therapy work? RTT allows clients to uncover and reframe limiting beliefs that often hold them back without them knowing the root cause. Through hypnosis, Alice helps clients access their subconscious mind, revealing deep-seated blocks and reframing them into more empowering beliefs, leading to life-changing results. Clients come to her with various issues, often without understanding the origin of their struggles—whether it’s low self-confidence, relationship challenges, financial limitations, or even physical conditions like unexplained infertility.

For instance, she has helped a client in his 40s eliminate chronic migraines that had persisted for over 30 years. After countless medical consultations and no physical cause found, a session with Alice revealed an emotional root to his pain.

Alice supports people in transforming areas of their lives they might have thought unchangeable, helping them replace self-limiting patterns with empowering beliefs for a lasting impact.

Overcoming Limiting Beliefs

Reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, Alice acknowledges that the path has been like a rollercoaster, as it is for many.

For her, the hardest part was letting go of the belief that she couldn't do it—that being her own boss and running a business wasn’t “meant for her.” She thought it was too big a dream, with no clear starting point, and that self-doubt was her biggest hurdle.

Alice credits her husband as a key inspiration in breaking down these mental barriers. He, too, had spent his entire career working for others, but after moving to Australia, he decided to try something entirely new: becoming a shoemaker. Alice remembers her initial reaction, wondering, “How? You don’t even know how to make shoes!”

However, he was determined to follow his passion for working with his hands and decided to give it a shot. Watching him, a Chilean in Australia with no prior experience, successfully create his own business opened Alice’s eyes to the possibility that if he could pursue his dreams, she could, too.

This shift in belief was the most important step in her journey toward self-employment.

The Entrepreneurial Path

When it comes to finding clients, Alice’s journey has been surprisingly smooth.

Even before she graduated, she began telling people she was studying rapid transformation therapy, and people were instantly interested. Alice believes that when you’re following a path that aligns with your life purpose, the universe supports you. This alignment, she says, is what makes clients come to her naturally, as if her purpose draws them in.

Balancing her role as a mom with her work is essential to her, so she doesn’t actively seek more clients than she can manage.

For her, the question of finding clients has never been a worry—it’s been a natural, unfolding process, one that reinforces her belief in the power of purpose.

Balancing Work and Family

With two kids and a business she’s built over the past few years, Alice has found work-life balance by setting clear expectations from the start.

When she became pregnant with her first daughter right after completing the RTT course, she knew she didn’t want to put her career on hold. Instead, she was determined to integrate both her roles as a mother and a therapist.

Alice chose to stay a full-time mom, and with her husband’s support and the flexibility of his business, they created a schedule that allowed her to work a few hours a week. For Alice, having even three hours a week where her husband cares for their baby has been enough for her to work with one client a week. This approach lets her fully embrace both motherhood and entrepreneurship without feeling like she’s sacrificing one for the other.

Alice isn’t focused on making billions or having a nine-to-five job. If she can work with one client a week, it’s enough to fill her cup and keep her passion alive, allowing her to enjoy a fulfilling work-life balance.

The Motherhood Experience

Alice believes that all mothers feel some pressure to be the best mom they can be, to make sure they’re present enough for their children and spend quality time with them.

But through her own motherhood journey, her biggest takeaway has been: don’t compare yourself to other moms and don’t compare your child to others. Every mother and child is on their own unique path, and it’s important to trust your intuition about what’s best for you and your family.

For Alice, this meant making the decision not to send her daughter to daycare until she was two years old, even though those were the early years of building her business. She wanted to be there for those first two years, prioritizing motherhood over business success.

In the beginning, this meant only having one client a month, but that was enough. Alice believes that when you have the will, things always work out, and in her case, it did. She attracted clients who respected her schedule and supported her balance as a mom.

Now, with her second child, Alice finds that her clients continue to be understanding and flexible. For example, when she has a scheduling conflict, they are happy to accommodate her, just as she does for them. She knows that if a client isn’t willing to offer flexibility, then they aren’t the right fit for her.

When Alice is with her clients, she gives them 100% of her focus. She ensures that her husband is looking after their son while she works, and in that space, she’s fully present as a therapist. Alice has learned that it’s absolutely possible to be fully dedicated to both motherhood and her business, giving her best to both.

Relationship with Money

Alice shares that she grew up with a scarcity mindset, influenced by her French father, who often said things like, "Money doesn't grow on trees," "Money doesn't buy happiness," and "Rich people are arrogant." This instilled a negative view of money in her from a young age, and throughout her life, she carried a constant fear of never having enough. She felt the need to always save and be cautious with money, as though there was never a sense of abundance.

When COVID hit and she lost her job, this fear resurfaced. With no job and the uncertainty of the pandemic, Alice once again found herself worrying about money.

During this time, a friend from her studies in Canada introduced her to the 21-day Deepak Chopra abundance meditation. Though skeptical at first, Alice decided to give it a try. She quickly realized that she had been unconsciously carrying this scarcity mindset all along.

Through the meditation, Alice started to notice more abundance in her life—not just in financial terms but in everything around her. She learned to be grateful for the little things, like the beauty of nature and began to feel a deeper sense of presence in everyday moments. For example, when she saw a kookaburra outside her window, she would pause and appreciate the simple joy of seeing such a beautiful bird.

Had she not done the 21-day challenge, Alice believes she may have turned down the opportunity to join Marissa Peer’s RTT course when the ad popped up. She might have thought, “I can't afford this; it's too expensive.” But thanks to her shift in mindset, she embraced the course as an investment in herself. The challenge helped her see that money comes and goes, and there’s always abundance available to her.

This newfound perspective empowered her to move forward with the course, which ultimately led her to where she is today.

Date Your Finances

Alice explains how the concept of "dating your finances," introduced by Lucy, has been a game changer for her as an entrepreneur.

Using a simple, magic spreadsheet created by Lucy, Alice spends about 30 minutes to an hour each month reviewing her bank transactions, both personal and business-related. This process allows her to see exactly where her money is going and helps her identify areas for improvement.

One key realization, for example, was how much she was spending on coffee. Since she loves coffee, she used to buy it frequently at $6 per cup, especially when opting for oat milk. This led her to invest in a coffee machine, saving money in the long run—a small but significant shift in her personal spending.

On the business side, the spreadsheet has made her finances incredibly efficient. The first time Alice took the spreadsheet to her tax accountant, the accountant was impressed, saying, "You've done the job already. You don't need me!" The spreadsheet made it easy to input the numbers, and her end-of-year taxes were completed in just five minutes.

This clarity has also helped Alice make smarter investments in her business. By tracking her earnings, she’s been able to allocate money for courses, such as the Rapid Transformation Coaching course, which led to her becoming a certified coach. She’s also invested in a conscious parenting course this year. Thanks to the clarity from "dating her finances," Alice has a better understanding of her numbers, enabling her to make informed decisions about where and how much to invest in her personal and professional growth.

Practicing Gratitude

Alice shares that while she wishes she had time for daily yoga, meditation, and other self-care practices, she has found one simple yet incredibly powerful tool for cultivating gratitude: writing down five things she's grateful for each day.

She believes that when we focus on the positive aspects of our lives, we attract more of that positivity. It’s a quick, easy exercise, but it has a lasting impact on our mindset and energy. By consistently practicing gratitude, we train ourselves to notice the good things around us, which leads to more joy and fulfillment in our lives.

It’s a simple habit with profound long-term benefits.
