Money as a Relationship

Welcome to another episode of Financial Fridays! Today, we’re diving into the concept of “dating your finances.” I know—dating your money? Sounds strange, right?

If you feel hesitant about the idea or even avoid looking at your bank account, you’re not alone. Many people have a complicated or distant relationship with money, but today, I want to change that perspective.

Money is more than numbers—it’s a relationship we need to nurture. Like any relationship, there’s a discovery phase, where we’re figuring out how it works and how to feel comfortable with it. When we talk about money, it often circles back to security. We all crave that sense of safety, and that's why having a financial cushion makes us feel secure. But what if your relationship with money is strained or non-existent? In this episode, I invite you to explore a new mindset.

Instead of viewing money as a goal, what if you saw it as a tool? Sometimes we have a lot of it, sometimes not. Life throws curveballs, like when I lost 90% of my revenue during the pandemic. As an entrepreneur living abroad, I didn’t have the safety nets that others might. But I was prepared with savings, giving me space and time to pivot, even if that meant taking a job temporarily before launching a new venture.

Money, like life, ebbs and flows. Some periods are abundant, others less so.

But the key is to view money as energy—a resource that flows in and out. And what is the first step to unlocking more abundance? Gratitude. Be thankful for what you already have—whether it’s a roof over your head, food on the table, or something as simple as your favorite cup of coffee. Gratitude attracts more abundance, opening the door to new opportunities.

So today, take a moment to appreciate what you have and start viewing money as the tool that helps you build the life you want.

Date Your Finances

It helped me move forward—dating my finances.

So, what is Date Your Finances? It’s the name of my business, but it’s also a method I follow every month. I sit down and review my bank account, checking if I’ve invoiced all my clients and received payments, and tracking both business and personal expenses. I categorize where my money is going, and ask: Is it aligned with my goals? Am I still paying for subscriptions I don’t use?

So many clients have told me, "Lucy, I didn’t even realize I was still paying for that gym I went to twice!" This is why dating your finances is so crucial.

It boosts awareness of where your money is flowing. But I always tell clients: don’t be too hard on yourself when reviewing the past—you can’t change it. What you can do is learn from it and make better decisions moving forward. If you’ve overspent on shopping but wanted to save for a vacation, now you have the clarity to shift your spending and save for that beach getaway.

Dating your finances helps you become an expert on your financial self. Even wealthy people will regularly review their finances because it’s a powerful tool for wealth creation and financial freedom. By managing your money, you open the door to more abundance and empowerment.

So, join the movement—let’s date our finances together! For the full conversation on today’s Financial Friday, tune in on your favorite podcast platform.
